USA, Britain and Australia agree on a defense partnership

The United States, Britain and Australia have agreed to cooperate on security issues, including in the defense sector. The partnership was named AUKUS and will focus on the Indo-Pacific region. This was jointly announced by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson during a virtual conference, Bloomberg reports.

“We all recognize the need to bring peace and stability to the Indo-Pacific over the long term. The future of each of our countries and indeed the world depends on a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” Biden said.

As part of the agreement, the countries will exchange advanced technologies, they also intend to expand cooperation in areas such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Politico, citing two sources among US officials, writes that in this way the Western allies want to oppose the strengthening of China in the military and technological spheres. American television station ABC also reports that the new partnership must counter Beijing's regional influence, especially in the disputed South China Sea.
